Zagreb, Plitvice Lakes and Split!

Zagreb, Plitvice National Park and Split was done in our whistle-stop tour tradition, but this time cramming in 3 places into 48 hours. As all three are pretty big locations when people travel to Croatia it was only fair we did them all. Read more...

Arriving in Zagreb gone 9pm after a long delayed train from Budapest we left our stuff in our hostel (after taking ages to find the place) and went to grab food. The accommodation was everything you needed - clean, friendly and helpful. We were in and out so unfortunately didn't get to see much of Zagreb at all - maybe one for next time.

In the morning we joined the hostels tour group to the Plitvice National Park. After much deliberation on whether to make our own way there, stay there instead of Zagreb or do the lakes as a day trip from Split, this seemed like our best option. It was a 2 hour coach ride to the park. Walking around the site was incredible. Everything was untouched and completely left for nature to take it's course. You follow a small path around the site (which can take all day if you want it to - the park is huge), crossing flowing rivers and around rock faces, as well as taking boats across the lakes and trains between stations within the park. The lakes were a beautiful clear turquoise colour. Everything we saw was unlike anywhere we'd ever been and it was so beautiful. Take a look at our photos as I probably haven't done it justice:

After this we took a 4/5 hour coach journey down to Split. This meant arriving late at our hostel and a pretty creepy experience. Finding anything in the dark is never good to begin with, but when we arrived everything was closed up and dark! Luckily we made our way in and were surprised by people actually being in the hostel tucked around the back. The accommodation was tiny having only 4 rooms but the people seemed to be enjoying it. Although we had our reservations, the place turned out to be quite sweet and welcoming.
Again we checked out less than 12 hours after checking in, and made our way to the beach.
We spent the day at Bacvice beach which is apparently the only beach in Croatia to have the blue flag. The water was incredibly clear and remained shallow for ages so you could walk out really far. The last couple of days had been pretty hectic so it was perfect just to lie on the beach and do nothing but soak up some sun and top up the tan!

Take a guess to which Croatian Island we ended up on next:
